![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Inside the somatic nervous system, there are mainly two types of neurons found sensory neurons and motor neurons. It is formed by the peripheral nerve fibers that carry sensory information (from the skin and the sense organs such as the skin) to the central nervous system and the motor nerve fibers of the central nervous system, that then travel to the skeletal muscles and invoke a response. The somatic nervous system carries the information about the movements and the senses from the central nervous system to the rest of the body and vice versa, via electricochemical signals. Neurons have a body and an axon, the body of the neuron is located within the central nervous system, and the axon is imbedded within the skeletal muscles, skin or sensory organs. This includes voluntary or skeletal muscles and sensory receptors in the skin, which are specialized endings of the nerve fibers that detect information within the body and around it. This system contains of nerve fibers (also known as nerve cells) that connect to the brain and spinal cord with muscles controlled by conscious effort, and that carry information associated with movement under the central nervous system to the rest of the body and vice versa, via electrochemical signals. Unlike somatic reflexes, visceral reflexes are polysynaptic, and they have two efferent nerve fibres between the central nervous system and the effector organ. Furthermore, somatic reflexes are mostly voluntary while visceral reflexes are autonomic and involuntary. Somatic reflex targets skeletal muscles while visceral reflex targets soft tissue organs. The below infographic on difference between somatic and visceral reflex tabulates these differences. Hence, a difference between somatic and visceral reflex based on this is that most of the somatic reflexes are voluntary while visceral reflexes are usually involuntary. Also, the somatic nervous system controls somatic reflexes while the autonomic nervous system controls visceral reflexes. A further difference between somatic and visceral reflex is that the efferent pathway of visceral reflex involves two efferent nerve fibres but that of somatic reflex involves only one efferent fibre between the central nervous system and the effector. This is the key difference between somatic and visceral reflex. Somatic reflex occurs in the skeletal muscles while visceral reflex occurs in the smooth muscles of the inner organs. Somatic and visceral reflex are two types of reflex actions. What is the Difference Between Somatic and Visceral Reflex? Furthermore, often they have a similar afferent pathway. Both somatic and visceral reflexes have the same components.Somatic and Visceral Reflex are neural pathways from a stimulus to response. What are the Similarities Between Somatic and Visceral Reflex? Some examples of the somatic reflexes are blinking or knee-jerk arc, etc. Hence, these reflexes take place before information is reaching the brain. The spinal cord is the part of the central nervous system that controls somatic reflexes. Therefore, these reflexes involve the skeletal muscle contractions in response to stimuli. The somatic reflex is a reflex that occurs in the skeletal muscles. The somatic nervous system is a part of the peripheral nervous system. Side by Side Comparison – Somatic vs Visceral Reflex in Tabular Form Similarities Between Somatic and Visceral Reflexĥ. Autonomic reflex arc targets cardiac and smooth muscles, as well as glandular tissue (basically inner organs) while somatic arc targets skeletal muscles. Furthermore, there are two main types of reflex arc namely autonomic reflex arc and somatic reflex arc. A typical reflex arc has five different components namely sensory receptor, afferent neuron (sensory neuron), interneuron, efferent neuron ( motor neuron), and effector organ (muscle or organ). The key difference between somatic and visceral reflex is that the somatic reflex occurs in the skeletal muscles while the visceral reflex occurs in the soft tissue organs.Ī reflex arc is a neural pathway that controls a reflex action. ![]()
